Jubilee weekend racing

Although the weather may have cooled a little, there’s plenty of opportunity to sail this Spring Bank Holiday/Jubilee weekend - 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th June. The Spring Bank Series spans the 3 days with the winner being awarded the Hornblower Trophy (presented at the annual dinner dance and prize giving in November). Start times as usual: Saturday 2.30 pm, Sunday and Monday 1.00 pm.

Enterprise Open 2012

Sunday 27^th May – in glorious sunshine and with a fair bit of wind from time to time, SWSC hosted the second Open of the season, this time for the Enterprise. Twelve boats turned out to race and overall winners were Alan Johnson and Paula Foster from SCYC and Southport. In second place was Mark Lunn and Steve Blackburn from WLYC and in third was James Morley and Rachel Burtitt from Ulley. Mike Goodwin and Matt Bancroft fought hard and were the first SWSC boat home. There are a few photos of the boats on the water, so if you were sailing you may find yourself in action.

The new ‘Gallery’ and the Supernova Open

We now have a Gallery option on the website (see main navigation bar) which will feature sets of photos stored on the club’s new Yahoo Flickr account. We hope to add to the gallery throughout the year as long as there’s someone around to take the photographs. As a starter, you will find a set of photos from the recent Supernova Open and the slightly older images from the 2011 Southport 24 hour race. If you happen to end up with some reasonable photos during the year, please contact either Linda Merriman or Chris Lancaster.

John Horwood has been honing his journalistic skills and has written a report of the Supernova Open for the Class Association website. John has allowed us to pinch his words for the SWSC site – see Supernova Open 2012.

‘Have a go’ at sailing in 2012

As the poster asks, “Inspired by the London 2012 Games?”, then this is the year to ‘have a go’ at sailing at Scammonden Water Sailing Club. The club is hosting 2 ‘have a go’ sessions in 2012 on Saturday 28^th April and Saturday 16^th June. So, if you want to have a go and find out what the club has to offer, all you need to do is call Mike Goodwin on 07805 630062 to reserve a place, or if you prefer, send us an email enquiry.

Training at SWSC

If you want to start sailing why not enrol on one of our RYA approved courses under the guidance of the SWSC fully qualified training team. Demand has been high this year, but we still have places left on the RYA Level 1 course for beginners and improvers on 19th & 20th May – see the Training Centre pages for further information and contact details. If you are interested in sailing for juniors (normally up to the age of 16) we run a very successful Race Academy and Saturday Club. Two of our most successful junior members have recently featured in the The Huddersfield Daily Examiner having achieved regional and national success – see the video and read the story.

Caretaker’s Cup results

John H has been crunching the numbers again which means the Caretaker’s Cup results are now out. We’ve got a new page for this season’s results – ‘Results 2012/13‘ – but if you want to look at last year’s they’re still there as ‘Results 2011/12 (Archive)‘ under the ‘Racing’ menu.

DutyMan – our new interactive duty roster

For the 2012 season, we have introduced a new interactive duty rota through DutyMan. A reliable duty rota is critical to our sailing calendar, something we all rely on, and it looks like DutyMan will make the process a lot easier.
